16/7 To Knolls Track camping site

Finally,  no rain today!  It's pretty much a clear day.
We are just over 143km away from our first camping site on the Rig Road as the crow flies.  The desert there was teaming with flowers, but here there are none!  The sand dunes look much drier and have a more duller color.  This area may not have had any rain as the other one.

After packing up we headed along the Rig Road to the Knolls Track junction.  Here the average height of the sand dunes has risen to about 10m.  It started out as average 4 meters, so as you go further east they do get bigger!
Today we decided to do a short drive and camp early.  It was time to have showers!  Rather do that in the sun while it's much warmer.

We drove along the Rig Road until we hit the Knolls track junction.  Along the Rig Road we came across some of the Salt Lakes.  The first one we saw had a track across, but decided not to use it and do a detour around it to the south.  It's a very short detour, but we felt safer for it?  These lakes have a thin crust of salt on top of a muddy never ending pit.  If a car gets stuck in this bog and sinks, you may as well leave it as it's simply not possible to get it up again.  The bog is very deep so a heavy vehicle can easily disappear!   On the other side of the lake we stopped and walked out onto the lake.  It would probably been fine to cross it as it was very hard and dry.  However on the eastern side you have to climb a steep sand dune to join the road again!
At the Knolls junction we turned up the Knolls track which again joins the French line in about 35km.  We only went up about 20km until we found this nice campsite just off the track.
We also discovered that according to our maps the Knolls track has been shifted further right from it's original location on the map.  It's about 6km section which has been shifted.  Thus, all the maps are wrong, so don't panic!
We set up over shower tent and had our showers.  It was great to get the dust off!
I noticed in the campsite some old Camel tracks.  Thus, I walked up on top of the surrounding sand dune with my binoculars and tried to see if I could locate any Camels, but non made them selves visible.

We built our campfire and had a great evening.  With the clear skies the Milky Way was easy to see in all it's glory!

The Rig Road ahead

The first Salt Lake we saw, but didn't cross!
Others had crossed and created tracks!

Looking southwards across the lake

It would have been OK to cross as it's hard packed.

Just past the lake is the Knolls Track Junction

The signage at the Knolls track junction, only 34km back to the french line!

Nice campsite on the Knolls Track

The campfire in full swing!

You can make out the Milky Way!
