19th of September
Well, we woke up around seven-ish and had our brekkie. Then we headed for our walk and swim to the
Tjaynera Falls. This is a 2.6km return
walk and each way takes about half an hour.
Once we arrived at the fall we went for a welcome swim. I swam all the way up to the fall as
usual! We were the only ones this morning to enjoy the swim!! The Tjaynera Falls is a very pretty cascading waterfall
that has a large pool below it. It was
refreshing to go for the swim as every day here it gets up to 35 – 40 degrees
fairly quickly!. After swimming for half an hours, we
headed back to camp and packed all our stuff.
Once done I rigged up a sled from a piece of wood and placed a heavy
rock on it. I then used that as a load
to spool in the rope onto the winch.
Once done, we were off again!
After only a few kilometers drive, we came off the gravel track and joined the main
bitumen road in the park. We then went straight to the main attraction in Litchfield, Wangi
Falls!. A very pretty waterfall, with a
large pool below it, whereby lots of people were swimming in!
We went to the lookout and also did the 1.8km
walk around and above the falls. We
didn’t go for the swim amongst the crowd, but decided to have an ice-cream
instead!. It was a pretty hot day, only around
40 degrees!!
From there we drove to the next fall, called Tolmer
Falls. There is a short walk to a
lookout above the fall, but no swimming allowed.
No one is allowed to go down to the pool below the fall. The fall has carved out a cave in the cliff
that houses some rare and endangered bat species. Thus it’s a no go zone.
From there we went to Buley Rockhole campsite and
camped. We had gone earlier to the 4Wd
campsite at the Florence falls, but all the signs there prohibited any swimming
in the Florcence Creek.
From the Buley campsite
there is a very a short walk to the Buley Rockholes.
These are small pools in the Florence river further up-stream from the
falls, whereby one is allowed to swim and cool off. It’s a great spot, a bit popular as there
were several other people there.
However, given how hot it was, we needed to cool off, so in we went. I think we spend almost two hours
there!! We then went back to camp to
settle in for the night. Initially we
thought that we would be alone in the campsite, but after dark, three other
cars turned up. One of them camped in
the spot next to us. It had three young
people, two boys and a girl. We thought
we would have an early night and go to sleep, but these three just kept drinking and talking on and
on well past midnight, especially the girl!. We now know her
life’s history whether we wanted to or not!! Even one of the boys said to her "Shut
the f### up!” at times. So, we didn’t
get much sleep that night.
